Ski Mountaineering

New Hampshire's Backcountry Ski Areas

The White Mountain's of New Hampshire offer a wide variety of terrain for backcountry skiing. The gentle slopes and ski trails of Mt Cardigan provide perfect terrain for our introductory backcountry ski lessons while Mt Washington, Mt Lafayette and many other peaks may satisfy the more advanced skier with steep ski descents in chutes and ravines.

On our guided backcountry ski tours we instruct you in techniques which reduce the risks while skiing off the groomed trails and in steep terrain. Tour planning, uphill track setting, downhill ski techniques and avalanche awareness are topics covered on our backcountry ski tours. Powder skiing is typical of our early season (Dec-Feb) and then comes the festive spring skiing season which can last until April.

Our day and overnight ski tours include runs on Mt. Washington, Mt. Lafayette, Mt. Moosilauke, Mt. Cardigan, and others.

For downhill skiers alpine touring equipment with randonnee bindings allow the skier to release the heel making travel uphill possible. When its time to ski down all you need to do is lock your heel back in place and make downhill ski turns. For telemarkers we recommend a plastic boot and ski equipment with metal edges.

Vermont's Backcountry Ski Touring Areas

Earn your turns in Vermont! Dodge the lift lines, and get out in the backcountry with MMG. The classic Tear Drop offers gorgeous views, double fall lines, optional glades, and as an added bonus, we may summit Vermont’s highest peak along the way! If the Tear Drop is Vermont’s quintessential steep descent, The Bolton to Trapps Traverse is perhaps its most sought after tour, and is best accomplished on lighter free-heel gear. From the Bolton Valley Touring Center, we’ll climb steadily up to the crest of the Green Mountains, with frequent views of Bolton, Camel’s Hump and the Worcester Range along the way. If conditions are prime, we’ll be tempted to take some laps in the glades along the way, but we’ve got a full day ahead, so we’ll need to pace ourselves. The tour traces an elegant line through very remote terrain, so we’ll be attentive to route finding and navigation as we work our way toward the fantastic descent in to the Nebraska Valley. After passing more beckoning glades (do we have it in our legs to take a lap or two?), we’ll emerge on to the Trapps road with tired legs and big appetites. Fortunately we’ve prepositioned a car here, and the bustling town of Stowe is just down the road!
