Red Rocks Climbing Trip April 9 - 30 2006

Each spring I have been able to travel and climb in Red Rocks for work with the American Mountain Guides and for private trips with friends and guests. The sandstone is soft to the touch, the climbs are varied with cracks, slabs, and an abundance of face holds. There is plenty of sunshine but surprisingly the temperature can be on the cool side. This combination makes climbing some very enjoyable climbing.

I have put together a group of photos for you to enjoy from this past April's trip.

Kent McBride tackles the wide cracks on the Community Pillar Route in Pine Creek Canyon. This route is 8 pitches of steep cracks , off-widths and chimneys in the 5.9 range. At time you climb inside the cliff up chimneys, a very different type of climbing.

Here Kent tops out on the exposed last pitch. Check out the rock shape and surrounding colors ... it's wild.

Here we are at the Lotta balls Wall climbing Brehas Brew. Matt Mieczkowski and Gonzalo Montenegro are practicing guiding techniques to train for the AMGA certification exam.

During this trip I ventured into the remote Windy Peak canyon. Mark Puleio and Paul Ivaska arrive at the belay high up on Hot Fudge Thursday.

Matt practices short rope techniques on the way to the upper pitches of Sundog in Oak Creek Canyon.

Pete Keane of Timberline Mountain Guides starts up the classic Dark Shadows route.

Jake Stabile follows the excellent 5.8 third pitch. The lower pitches of this route offer steep climbing on quality varnished sandstone.

Jake works the wide pitches of Group Therapy at the Angel Food Wall.

Pete Keane having a blast on the Black Orpheus route.

Jake climbing the parallel cracks on the 9th pitch of Black Orpheus.

This pitch is rated 5.6. We felt it was one of the harder ones on the route, don't always trust the route topos.

Pete and Jake on the summit slabs of Black Orpheus.
