The Presidential Traverse
During March 6-8 Mark, Ed, and Art Mooney were treated to rare weather conditions on the traverse of the Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. During the traverse visibility was mainly clear. In the mornings we had views to the east all the way to the Atlantic Ocean and to the west the peaks of Mt Mansfield and Jay Peak. In the evenings the alpenglow on the surrounding peaks was spectacular. The other noteable condition was the lack of wind for three consecutive days, this does not happen very often in this range. Mark and Ed both summited all nine of the peaks along the route making this a true traverse of the peaks in the Presidential Range. We all enjoyed these conditions to the fullest and have a lasting mountain experience to remember. ![]() Mark Jagel and Ed Viani at Appalachia the start of the Presidential Traverse ![]() Mark and Ed nearing the summit of Mt Madison in clearing skies with Mt Washington in the distance ![]() Mount Madison summit ![]() Art & Ed enjoying blue skies on Mt Madison ![]() Mark leaving our Shpinx col campsite ![]() Ed enjoying superb conditions midway along the traverse ![]() Following the cog railway tracks to Mt Washington's summit ![]() Perfect neve conditions for cramponing ![]() Clear above, 100 mile visibitity from Mt Washington's summit at 6288 ft. ![]() Lake of the Clouds lives up to it's name ![]() The southern traverse with Mt Eisenhower in the distance |
