Mountaineering

New Hampshire's White Mountains offer some of the finest winter mountaineering climbs in the northeast. Even though the peaks in the Whites are relatively low in elevation there are substantial elevation gains from trailhead to the summit and you may encounter some of the world's harshest weather. Arctic temperatures, high winds, and low visibility are common on these mountains. During single and multi day trips you will learn the fundamental skills of winter camping, travel and technical mountain climbing. Ice axe use, crampon techniques, roped travel, avalanche awareness, route finding, navigation and much more are the subjects of our winter mountaineering courses and guided ice climbs. As you may know New England has no glaciers but we can teach you the skills commonly used to travel in glaciated terrain to prepare you for your expedition or perhaps one of ours. Whether you are interested in a day climb of Mt. Washington or a multi-day Presidential Range Traverse our personal instruction will teach you how to safely participate in the exciting sport of winter mountaineering.
Mt Layfayette
Located just of route 93 in Franconia Notch NH, Mt Lafayette rises for three thousand feet above the valley floor. There are many mountaineering routes in this area. One of our favorites is a traverse along the Lafayette Ridge. This is a spectacular nine mile loop with the majority of travel above tree line. The location on route 93 just 2.5 hours from Boston make this a perfect day or overnight climb for those wishing to experience the magic of the White Mountains in winter.

Crawford Notch
The easy access to Mt Webster, Willeys Slide and Mt Willard make this area one of the most popular areas for winter alpine snow and ice climbing in the northeast. Crawford Notch is home to a wide variety of winter mountaineering routes, steep ice climbs, and moderate snow and ice gullies. Crawford Notch is located of route 302 between the towns of Bartlett and Twin Mountain NH. Due to its central location Crawford is a good choice for single day climbs from the Portland,Boston, and southern NH travelers.

Mt Washington
Without a doubt the most recognized peak on the east coast. Towering above the valley at 6288 feet this peak will challenge even the most experience mountain traveler. Arctic temperatures, high winds, and deep snow make this peak an ideal training ground for those heading to Alaska or other high altitude climbs or those looking for a challenging winter mountaineering experience.
